The easiest way to build trust is through satisfied customers
Have you ever been on the fence over a product or service? Like many other people, you probably have. Whether it was the pricing or how long shipping would take, some area deep within your mind wasn't entirely sold on the idea.
Now, when this happened, did you search for reviews about the business? Did you scroll down further for reviews if you were on Amazon, perhaps? If you did, it's because you wanted to know more about other's experience with said product/service.
This happens with people every day. And if you're a freelancer, people do the same with your services. We care about the opinions of other customers because we wanted to be assured that our money will be spent on valuable goods and services. We worked hard for that money, right?
Which is why, as a freelancer, you need to be getting referrals from satisfied customers. Yes, you may very well be the most skilled freelancer in the world, but without other people backing you up, how can a random consumer happen to stumble across your website, and give you the benefit of the doubt? Would you, yourself, buy a product/service with zero reviews from anyone?
Maybe you would. But most people wouldn't.
Plus, it's not difficult to do. Just reach out to previous customers, ask for an honest depiction of their experience, then put it on your website. It's that simple. If they're willing to add their name or picture, then that's even better.
Either way, you need to be getting referrals or you could be missing out on potential customers/clients who might've otherwise hired you. By the way, this should be a process you're always doing. Ask everyone you've worked with for a referral. (Unless the experience was completely awful, in which case you're allowed to ignore that one. Sometimes you'll have a bad relationship, where neither party is to blame, but there's no common ground to be found. Ignore it and move on.)
So, the point is, whether you're just starting out in freelancing or if you've done it for years without referrals, consider implementing referral collections and bring peace of mind to those who are considering working with you. It's a lot easier to spend your hard earned money on something that other people are backing up.
